The Real Property Lister is
a position within the office of the Rusk County Treasurer.
In 2001, the job title was officially changed from Tax Lister to Real
Property Lister. My duties include those specified by Chapter 70.09 of
the Wisconsin Statutes. Since Rusk County is small, the Lister’s
office does all of its own printing, from assessor workbooks,
assessment rolls and notices, to tax rolls and bills. GCS of Onalaska,
Wisconsin provides our assessment and tax collection software. In
2003, Rusk County will be converting to the Windows Version of GCS. In
2001, Rusk County had transfers 1225 affecting 2442 parcels, 132
splits, 53 Certified Survey Maps, and no subdivision plats.
Rusk County is predominately rural and is 936 square miles in size.
Comprised of 24 townships, 8 villages and 1 city, the population s
15,347 according to the 2000 census. Rusk County’s current real estate
parcel count is 28,117 with a 2001 equalized value of $605,114,300.
Originally established as Gates County in 1901, Rusk County was formed
from a northern portion of Chippewa County. In 1905, Gates County
became Rusk County in honor of Jeremiah M. Rusk, 3 term Wisconsin
Governor and the first Secretary of Agriculture. Rusk County
celebrated it Centennial in 2001.
The Land Information Office is responsible for all mapping activities.
It is comprised of a full-time County Surveyor and a full-time
Research Clerk/Mapper. AutoCad is used for parcel mapping, and
Chequamegon Cad Services is contracted to parcel map on a township by
township basis. Parcel mapping activities are dependent upon awarded
grant money.
